i am a chair is the prototype for a series of objects made "intelligent" by integrating AI into the design. Using piezo sensors, the chair gathers signals caused by vibrations. Rather than being programmed by an algorithm to interpret the vibrations, a neural network allows the chair to learn what it means to sit, or not sit, in a chair, similarly to how the human brain creates schemas for multi-variable concepts such as a car. By training the chair on hundreds of examples, the chair acquires ultimate knowledge of what sitting in a chair means and make predictions whether it is being sat in or not. This literacy, however, is useless for the chair itself.
